Literary terms and definitions
Literary
devices are used in many and important ways. The writer or the speaker uses
literary terms or devices to elevate the meaning of their writing. They give
meaning to their writing through literary techniques.
How do literary
terms benefit a writer?
It elevates
the meaning.
The writer
freely talks about society, its norms and other related happenings around the
world through the use of literary terms.
It embodies
the word and the story.
It extends
the purpose of writing.
The writer
took fancy to the things for he talks through the literary items.
This use is
somewhat an ornamental representation of a work.
It is the
essentials of any piece of work to boost and give it a worthy cluster of
words through the use of literary terms.
Literary
terms are used to acknowledge society, ridicule society and put this society on the formulation for a presentable society by the art of words.
It is an art
of the writer to utilize the word in a way that not only enhances the
writing but paint a picture where the theme shouts with a mere sight.
There are
lots of literary devices that have been used in English, some of them are;
Theme
The theme is
actually the lesson or moral on which the whole story revolves. It can be
called the central idea of the story.
For
instance;
A famous
story bearing the moral “All that glitters is not gold” is actually the theme
of the story by which the whole storyline proceeds.
Metaphor
The word
metaphor is used as a figure of speech to compare two different things but
share one thing in common. It is used in writing and other works to give height especially
in poems to elevate the meaning but at the same time metaphor is used
colloquially in literature, writing or speech as well. The comparison takes
place without “like” or “as”.
For example;
All the
world is a stage. All the men and women are actors in it. They have their own entrances
and exits. (William Shakespeare)
These are
the metaphorical lines.
I am
uranium. It is another metaphorical figure of speech.
My father is
the pillar of our house is another example of a metaphor.
Simile
A simile is
also a subcategory of metaphor in the figure of speech. A simile is also a direct
comparison between two entirely different things using
“like” or “As”. The purpose of this figure of speech is to broaden the meaning
of the sentence and to explain the meaning of the whole sentence.
For example;
Saima is as
beautiful as a lion.
The two
girls fought like Cat and Dog.
He is as
strong as iron
Irony
The irony is
used in the text to express the words in different styles and opposite in meaning .for example the meaning is different from
the written one you don’t mean what you write .there are different types of
irony.

Satire
is also a form of irony but positively as the purpose of the satire is not only to ridicule the society in a negative vein on their vices and follies but holds them firmly through this art of satire just to make them correct.
Motif
As literary
term motif is an idea, object or baseline idea in an image recurring itself
throughout the picture or an image. Many writers, speakers and poets use the motif
to serve many ideas at the same time. A motif can be a symbolic representation of
an idea.
For example
Look at the
dress you wear has the motif; the basic colour of your dress is actually the motif
that provides an idea to the rest of the design on the suit.
The word
“death” can be a motif in any writing
that comes along with the words, funeral, grave, death and so on.
Imagery
It is a
sensory utilization of pictorial figurative language. It involves mental images
with different senses to define a perspective through images.
For example
The moonlight was shiny and bright.
The word “shiny”
and “bright” is imagery.
Conclusion
Literary
devices or literary terms are as important for the writer or the poet as fire
needs fuel. It establishes their versatility in informing the idea and the best
use of words to elevate the temperament of their writing.
